Theresa May is a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2016 to 2019. Born Theresa Brasier in 1956, she was educated at St Hugh's College, Oxford.
Entering Parliament in 1997 as the Member of Parliament for Maidenhead, she rose through the Conservative Party ranks, holding various positions including Home Secretary from 2010 to 2016, the longest-serving Home Secretary in over 60 years.
As Prime Minister, May oversaw the initial stages of Brexit following the 2016 referendum. She triggered Article 50, the formal process for leaving the European Union, and negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the EU. However, she failed to gain parliamentary support for her deal.
She resigned as Prime Minister in 2019 and remains a Member of Parliament. Her premiership was dominated by Brexit and marked by challenges navigating a deeply divided political landscape.
